Mozambique tourism attracts US$1.1bn in five years – summit backs PPPs and digital push
Mozambique’s tourism sector attracted more than US$1.1 billion in investment between 2018 and 2022, making it the country’s third‑largest investment‑receiving sector, according to CTA vice‑president Onório Manuel. Speaking at the opening of the first Mozambique Tourism Summit in Vilanculos on 4 November, he noted the sector’s role in growth and jobs, with 2016–2019 arrivals averaging about two million a year and tourism contributing 4.5% of GDP and 32% of services exports.
Public–private partnerships were highlighted as key to mobilising infrastructure, skills and air and road connectivity, alongside a private‑sector push for digitisation – from online promotion and electronic bookings to integrated destination management. Government targets include lifting foreign tourism revenue from over €200 million in 2024 to €360 million by 2029 and increasing tourism’s share of GDP to 6%, with priorities in the Five‑Year Programme 2025–2029 to attract major events and position Mozambique for business tourism.
