Mozambique Targets 5G Rollout in Tourist Zones and Provincial Capitals by 2027
Mozambique's President Daniel Chapo has pledged to deploy 5G mobile network technology across all provincial capitals, special economic zones and the country's main tourist destinations by 2027, with full broadband coverage across all districts targeted by 2030. The announcement was made at the opening of the 5th National Communications Conference in Maputo, organised by the Mozambican Communications Regulatory Authority (INCM), following an April spectrum auction in which the country's three mobile operators - state-owned Tmcel, Vodacom Mozambique and Movitel - competed for 5G rollout rights.
President Chapo described 5G as a strategic opportunity to accelerate digital inclusion, attract domestic and foreign investment and modernise public services. On the sidelines of the conference, Mozambique and Angola signed two memoranda of understanding covering cooperation in communications, ICT and meteorology, with agreements also opening the door to collaboration in the space sector. Chapo additionally confirmed that the Nacala - Lobito submarine cable project, linking the two countries, is currently in the design phase - infrastructure he described as positioning Mozambique as a key digital corridor within the SADC region.
