Liberia Secures UN Tourism Support to Overhaul its Tourism Sector

Liberia's National Tourism Authority has secured a pledge of institutional support from UN Tourism following a high-level meeting on 4 May between LNTA Director General Princess Eva Cooper and UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Al Nuwais. The engagement produced a concrete outcome - a joint technical working group comprising experts from both institutions, tasked with setting timelines, areas of engagement, and specific deliverables to advance Liberia's tourism development. Cooper outlined an ambitious reform agenda, requesting capacity-building programmes, technical assistance, regulatory and policy reforms, improved destination marketing, and greater access to global investment networks.

Al Nuwais signalled readiness to connect Liberia to international best-practice models and facilitate peer learning, citing Rwanda as a potential collaboration partner given its community-centred tourism transformation. She also commended Liberia's recent adoption of the Tourism Satellite Account, describing the standardised economic measurement tool as a foundation of modern tourism management. Priority areas identified include updating Liberia's Tourism Development Strategy, expanding digital transformation, improving hospitality standards, developing surfing sites and eco-lodges, and raising the country's global market visibility. Infrastructure gaps - including road access and accommodation standards - were acknowledged as key areas requiring coordinated investment if diplomatic momentum is to translate into tangible visitor growth.
