Ghana Launches US$400,000 Road Safety Project to Strengthen Tourism Confidence
A US$400,000 five-year Road Travel Safety and Tourism Project was launched today, 4 August 2026, at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra. The initiative is a collaboration between the Ghana Tourism Authority Ex-Staff Association (GHATEX), the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts. The project aims to promote safer road travel, encourage responsible road use, and build confidence in Ghana as a safe destination for domestic and international visitors.
The project will fund sustained public education and behavioural change campaigns, including animated videos, drama sketches, and multilingual educational materials in English and selected Ghanaian languages. The launch date coincides with the 52nd anniversary of Ghana's switch from left-hand to right-hand driving in 1974 - widely regarded as one of the country's most effective public awareness exercises. GHATEX has noted that rising road traffic crashes have increasingly affected travel decisions among both local and international visitors, and that improved road safety is critical to sustaining the country's tourism growth.
