Nigeria's Airline Capacity Surges 37% with Lagos Leading Africa's Airport Growth
Nigeria has emerged as the fastest-growing aviation market among Africa's ten largest countries, with scheduled airline capacity reaching approximately 1.19 million departing seats in September 2026 - a 37.4% increase on the 864,100 seats recorded in September 2025, according to OAG data. Domestic capacity has grown even faster, up 44.8% year on year to approximately 877,000 seats. Air Peace has been the primary driver of expansion, growing its scheduled capacity by 54.7% to 354,804 seats, making it the fastest-growing major airline on the continent and returning it to Africa's top ten carriers by capacity. Lagos's Murtala Muhammed International Airport has recorded 24.1% year-on-year seat growth to approximately 470,000 scheduled seats, the fastest growth rate among Africa's ten largest airports.
OAG attributes Nigeria's rapid expansion to a combination of currency reforms, new aircraft leasing arrangements and growing airline confidence in the market, with foreign carriers including Etihad strengthening partnerships and connectivity into the country. The growth is unfolding within a broader period of continental aviation expansion - Africa's total scheduled capacity stands at approximately 25.8 million seats in September 2026, up 9.4% year on year. Nigeria's capacity, however, is growing at roughly four times the African average, underscoring its increasingly significant role in shaping the continent's aviation landscape.
