Kruger National Park Begins Reconstruction of Key Safari Route
Kruger National Park has commenced reconstruction of the H4-1 road, a major safari route connecting Skukuza and Lower Sabie rest camps, following severe flood damage earlier this year. The 43-kilometre tarred road, renowned for its wildlife viewing and scenic value, officially entered its restoration phase on 18 August 2025, with completion targeted for April 2026. Until then, visitors are advised to use designated bypasses and temporary detour routes.
The H4-1 is a vital corridor for both tourism and park operations, offering access to top game viewing areas and popular picnic spots like Nkuhlu and Sunset Dam. Its closure has highlighted the broader vulnerability of natural heritage sites to extreme weather events, reinforcing the need for resilient tourism infrastructure. SANParks' swift mobilisation reflects a commitment to maintaining Kruger’s status as a premier safari destination, with the road's repair expected to restore connectivity and boost visitor satisfaction across the park’s southern sector.
