Kruger closes border posts amid severe weather
The Border Management Authority has closed the Pafuri and Giriyondo border posts in Kruger National Park following Level 6 severe weather warnings for parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga and sustained heavy rainfall. SANParks has urged visitors to revise travel plans and follow staff guidance as fast‑flowing rivers – including De Laporte, N’watshitsaka, Crocodile and a rising Sabie impacting the Sand River – may cut routes between Satara, Tshokwane, Lower Sabie and Skukuza.
Roads may close at short notice for safety. Campers in vulnerable areas are being relocated within camps – caravans and motorhomes moved closer to chalets – and travellers to Skukuza Airport from north of Tshokwane should route via Satara or Orpen to Kruger Gate, or use the R40 outside the park and allow extra time. Overnight rainfall peaked at 90 mm at Pafuri – with Houtboschrand 85.5 mm, Tshokwane 73.5 mm and Shingwedzi 71 mm – and guests are urged not to drive through flooded crossings or remove road barriers as SAWS continues to monitor conditions.
