Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park Imposes 40-Litre Diesel Limit Amid Supply Disruption

South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed a temporary 40-litre diesel limit per vehicle per transaction at fuelling points within the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, following supply disruptions affecting the remote wilderness destination. The restriction, which takes effect immediately, applies across all park fuelling stations and requires travel professionals to update client communications and safari logistics accordingly. The South African government has clarified that no nationwide fuel shortage exists, with the disruption confined to isolated logistical challenges in remote areas.

Spanning nearly 38,000 square kilometres of semi-arid Kalahari landscape across South Africa and Botswana, the Kgalagadi's remoteness makes fuel management critical under normal circumstances - with significant distances separating the park's three main rest camps at Twee Rivieren, Nossob and Mata-Mata, and six additional wilderness camps operating without any services. Travel professionals are advised to instruct clients to fill tanks completely before entering the park, with Upington and towns along approach routes offering the most reliable pre-entry fuelling options. SANParks has indicated that updates will be issued as supply conditions improve, and visitors are encouraged to monitor official communications and maintain flexibility in their itineraries until normal operations resume.
