Kenya targets 10% GDP from tourism by 2027 – 5.5m arrivals
President William Ruto is set to announce major tourism policy measures during Jamhuri Day celebrations on Friday, guiding the sector towards contributing 10% of GDP by 2027 and attracting 5.5 million visitors. The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife is reviewing stakeholder proposals ahead of the address. The sector contributed more than Sh452 billion in 2024 and remains a key foreign‑exchange earner supporting over three million jobs directly and indirectly.
Speaking at the Kenya Tourism, Wildlife and MICE Week at KICC, Tourism and Wildlife CS Rebecca Miano said submissions will inform a comprehensive framework for the industry’s next phase. According to the WTTC, tourism is projected to contribute Sh1.2 trillion to Kenya’s economy in 2025 – over 7% of GDP – and sustain at least 1.7 million jobs, or 8% of national employment. President Ruto said Kenya will market its full proposition, from innovation and athletics to heritage sites and diverse communities, to drive growth.
