Kenya's tourism sees 21.3% growth in first half of 2024
Kenya's tourism industry has reported significant growth in the first six months of 2024, with revenue reaching Sh142.5 billion. The Kenya Tourists Board announced that the country welcomed 1,027,630 international visitors, marking a 21.3% increase from the same period in 2023.
Domestic tourism also saw a surge, recording 2.25 million bed nights, up 10% from last year. Kenya Tourists Board CEO June Chepkemei attributed the growth to rising domestic tourism numbers and increased visits to regions beyond the popular Maasai Mara National Reserve.
The Maasai Mara, currently at full capacity due to the wildebeest migration, serves as a hub for tourists exploring other areas. Chepkemei revealed plans to launch a second phase of the Tembea Kenya campaign to further boost domestic travel.
Kenya Wildlife Service Director General Erustus Kanga emphasized the importance of conservation and sustainable tourism practices. He highlighted KWS's efforts in training conservancy rangers, providing ecotourism management support, and empowering communities through nature-based enterprises.
The tourism sector's growth underscores Kenya's commitment to sustainable practices and enhancing visitor experiences.
