Kenya launches national carbon registry to boost climate finance
Kenya has launched a national carbon registry in Nairobi to track projects, verify emissions reductions and prevent double counting, aiming to position the country as a hub for high‑integrity carbon credits. Unveiled by the Ministry of Environment and the National Environment Management Authority, the platform aligns with Paris Agreement rules to increase transparency and investor confidence while ensuring local communities benefit.
Officials said more than 80 project concept notes have been submitted. The registry records project approvals, tracks verified reductions and authorises credit transfers with corresponding adjustments to avoid double claims. Leaders including Environment Cabinet Secretary Deborah Mlongo and climate envoy Ali Mohamed said the system strengthens governance and market trust, supporting conservation, job creation and sustainable development – with potential knock‑on benefits for nature‑based tourism and community livelihoods.
