Kenya Airways Seeks $500 Million for Fleet Expansion

Kenya Airways is aiming to raise at least $500 million in additional capital by the first quarter of 2026 to expand and modernise its fleet. The announcement follows the airline’s first-half pretax loss of KES 12.17 billion ($94 million), compared to a profit of KES 634 million during the same period last year. The loss was attributed to reduced revenue and passenger numbers, with three Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners temporarily grounded for maintenance.

CEO Allan Kilavuka confirmed that one of the grounded aircraft returned to service in July, and the airline is working towards full fleet availability by next year. The funding plan includes identifying capital sources and securing shareholder approval. As one of Africa’s leading carriers, Kenya Airways’ efforts to boost fleet capacity signal broader ambitions to improve regional and international connectivity amid a challenging operating environment.
