Johannesburg Ranks Eighth in Time Out's Global Street Food Index
Johannesburg has been named one of the world's top ten cities for street food, placing eighth in Time Out magazine's international ranking with a score of 56%. The listing, based on a global survey of city-dwellers, places Johannesburg alongside Bangkok at joint eighth, with Ho Chi Minh City topping the index at 63%, followed by Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta. Time Out noted that the recognition reflects a growing traveller appetite for food experiences that connect visitors directly to local culture and communities.
The ranking highlights a broadening of South Africa's culinary appeal beyond its established reputation for fine dining and wine. Standout spots cited include Amanda's in Soweto, known for its R14 kota, and The Hot Pot Kitchen in Midrand, a food truck built on indigenous ingredients and township flavours. The accolade adds to a string of recent international endorsements for South African cities, following Cape Town's recognition as the world's best city by Time Out in 2025 and its appearance in the publication's 2026 World's Best Food Cities ranking.
