Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Research Grant of $150,000 Opens Applications for African Scientists

The Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer (JWO) Research Grant is now accepting applications for its 2026 cycle, offering $150,000 to one early-career African scientist to undertake a research programme of up to three years focused on biodiversity and conservation. Now in its eighth year, the grant was established in 2019 in memory of Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer and is designed to address structural funding gaps facing African-based researchers while strengthening locally led scientific inquiry. Applications close on 1 May 2026, with the successful recipient to be announced on 28 August and formally awarded at the Oppenheimer Research Conference on 8 October 2026.

Eligibility is open to PhD holders with no more than seven years of post-degree research experience who hold demonstrable ties to a credible African institution. Last year's cycle drew a record 848 applications from 30 African countries, reflecting the breadth of scientific talent across the continent. The 2026 process will unfold in two stages - concept note reviews in May, followed by full proposals from shortlisted candidates in June and final interviews in August. The grant is positioned as a direct investment in African scientific leadership at a time when the continent's ecosystems remain central to global climate regulation and biodiversity stability.
