Global Hotel Construction Pipeline Hits Record High with Africa Posting 15% Growth
The global hotel construction pipeline reached an all-time high of 15,976 projects and 2,433,948 rooms at the end of Q2 2026, according to Lodging Econometrics' latest Hotel Construction Pipeline Trend Report. Of these, 6,174 projects comprising 1,043,290 rooms were under construction, while early-stage planning activity also hit record levels at 6,059 projects and 860,332 rooms - up 5% and 8% respectively year on year. The luxury segment stood at 1,385 projects and 257,947 rooms, with the US and China together accounting for 59% of all projects in the global pipeline.
Africa posted record project and room totals in Q2 2026, reaching 343 projects and 52,526 rooms - representing year-on-year growth of 15% by projects and 16% by rooms. The Middle East similarly reached a record 724 projects and 178,003 rooms, up 11% by projects. India recorded its highest-ever pipeline figures at 1,033 projects and 137,601 rooms, reflecting a 36% increase year on year. Globally, Lodging Econometrics forecasts 2,742 new hotel openings comprising 379,921 rooms by the end of 2026, rising to 2,590 openings and 389,412 rooms in 2027. For Africa's tourism sector, the sustained pipeline growth signals continued investor confidence in the continent's hospitality market.
