Seven New Frog Species in Madagascar Influence Conservation Decisions
An international research team has identified seven previously undescribed species of diamond frogs (Rhombophryne) in Madagascar, following more than 12 years of fieldwork, museum specimen analysis and advanced DNA sequencing. Led by Dr Mark D. Scherz, Curator of Herpetology at the Natural History Museum Denmark, the study combined repeated field expeditions with museomics - the recovery of genetic material from historical museum specimens - to resolve longstanding taxonomic uncertainties and accurately map the distribution of the newly identified species. The seven additions bring the total number of recognised Rhombophryne species to 27.
The findings are already influencing conservation planning on the ground. At a protected area planning workshop held in March 2026 under Madagascar's Biodiversity 30×30 Programme, several newly named species - including Rhombophryne quentini - informed proposals to strengthen and expand protected areas. Researchers caution that basic data on breeding biology, population sizes and ecological requirements remains scarce for many species, complicating conservation assessments in forests facing increasing fragmentation. For Madagascar's nature-based tourism sector, the study adds to the country's standing as one of the world's foremost biodiversity destinations, with scientists noting that further undescribed species are likely still to be found.
