Ghana reassures visitor safety after viral extortion claims
Ghana’s Diaspora Affairs Office has assured international visitors that the country remains safe and secure during the festive season, following a viral video alleging that Black American tourists were abducted and extorted by individuals posing as police. In a statement issued on 11 December 2025 – signed by Kofi Okyere Darko – the office said traveller safety remains a priority, particularly during peak tourism periods.
The Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority have opened investigations to establish the facts, though attempts to reach one of the claimants have been unsuccessful after the video was deleted and investigators were blocked. Authorities said Ghana’s reputation as a peaceful and welcoming destination stands, with security agencies fully deployed to protect visitors.
