Ghana minister urges Africa‑wide collaboration on cultural heritage
Ghana’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has called for stronger continental cooperation to protect, manage and present Africa’s cultural heritage with authenticity and inclusivity. Speaking at the opening of a workshop on the interpretation and presentation of World Heritage Sites in Accra on 18 November, she urged community‑centred approaches and youth engagement to shape narratives that support sustainable, culturally rooted tourism.
The workshop – organised by the Ministry, Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) and the International Centre for the Interpretation and Presentation of World Heritage Sites (WHIPIC), with support from the Ghana Commission for UNESCO and UNESCO – gathers heritage professionals from across Africa for capacity‑building and collaboration, including practical fieldwork. Speakers from AWHF and UNESCO’s Ghana Commission emphasised involving local communities, avoiding colonial framings and strengthening Africa’s presence on the UNESCO World Heritage List to advance sustainable tourism and community‑based conservation.
