Ethiopian National Park posts Q1 visitor surge

Ethiopia’s Bale Mountains National Park reported 3,690 visitors in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, with foreign travellers accounting for 45% – a rise of more than 17% year on year, according to park authorities. Officials cite recent road and tourism infrastructure upgrades and heightened visibility following its UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription as key drivers of demand.

Visitor growth translated into higher earnings, with local eco‑tourism associations generating 9 million Birr in the quarter – up 2 million – and the park’s own revenue reaching 600,000 Birr, up 200,000. The park spans over 2,000 square kilometres and protects endemic species including the Ethiopian wolf, mountain nyala and Bale monkey, while regional authorities plan further product development and marketing to sustain momentum and broaden community benefits.
