Ethiopia advances Bishoftu International Airport
Ethiopia has set out plans for the Bishoftu International Airport, a new greenfield hub about 40 km south‑west of Addis Ababa designed to ease pressure on Bole International and position the country as a continental gateway. Phase one is valued at about US$12.5 billion, is targeting completion by 2030 and will accommodate up to 60 million passengers annually; full build‑out is planned to handle 110 million, which would make it Africa’s largest airport and a significant driver of trade, connectivity and tourism.
Ethiopian Airlines Group is sponsoring the project with the African Development Bank as Initial Mandated Lead Arranger, and Dar Al‑Handasah, KPMG and Clyde & Co as technical, financial and legal advisers. A Project Information Memorandum and financial model have been issued to prospective lenders, EPC contractor prequalification is under way with bids due mid‑December 2025, and the scheme is being promoted at the Africa Investment Forum Market Days in Rabat from 26 – 28 November 2025, signalling momentum toward procurement and financial close.
