Egypt releases three endangered green turtles following rescue
Egypt has released three endangered green sea turtles back into their natural habitat following rescue and rehabilitation in the governorates of Dakahlia and Suez, the Ministry of Environment confirmed during National Environment Day on 27 January. Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment Dr Manal Awad said the operation supports ongoing efforts to protect wildlife and preserve biodiversity, underpinning healthy marine ecosystems important to coastal tourism.
One turtle was managed by the East Delta branch of the Environmental Affairs Agency in Mansoura, treated for fractures at the Sea Turtle Rescue Centre in the Ashtoum El-Gamil Reserve, tagged with ID 85 and named “Irene” before release. The other two were rescued by the EEAA’s Suez Regional Branch with civil society organisations, with all three released after full recovery. In related activity, the Alexandria and West Delta branch ran a single-use plastic reduction campaign, distributing 1,000 cloth bags, as National Environment Day marked the anniversary of Egypt’s first environmental protection law, issued in 1994.
