Cape Town unveils Braille beach signage at Blaauwberg Nature Reserve

South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has unveiled the first Braille informational beach signage at Blaauwberg Nature Reserve in Cape Town, improving access for visually impaired visitors. The new boards feature Braille, raised tactile text and QR codes linking to audio descriptions and additional information.

Minister Willie Aucamp said the department is revitalising national coastal signage with a focus on inclusivity and technology, with plans to extend the programme to harbours such as Mossel Bay. Delivered in collaboration with the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa, the project will introduce new interpretive content – including the Life on the Edge series – to enhance accessible visitor experiences along the coast and strengthen inclusive tourism and environmental education.
