British High Commissioner Praises Uganda’s Rhino Conservation Milestone
The British High Commissioner to Uganda, Lisa Chesney, has lauded Uganda’s efforts in rhino conservation during a visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Accompanied by officials from the British Embassy, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), and the Uganda Tourism Board, Chesney highlighted the progress made since the reintroduction of Southern White Rhinos in 2005, praising the revival of a species that went extinct locally in 1983. Her visit marks the lead-up to the Rhino Naming Ceremony on 22 September, part of a campaign aiming to raise $11 million to support conservation.
Uganda now hosts 48 rhinos, including 17 calves awaiting names as part of UWA’s “Name and Save a Rhino” campaign. UWA executive director Dr James Musinguzi said each naming directly contributes to long-term conservation, with plans underway to reintroduce rhinos to Ajai Wildlife Reserve and Kidepo Valley National Park. Uganda Tourism Board CEO Juliana Kaggwa noted that the initiative strengthens Uganda’s positioning as a Big Seven destination, blending tourism promotion with wildlife protection.
