Angola Positions Itself as Major African Tourism Investment Destination

Angola has taken a significant step in its bid to become one of Africa's leading tourism investment destinations, hosting a high-level forum this week that brought together government officials, international investors, aviation stakeholders, development institutions and African Union representatives. The event, organised by Angolan tourism authorities as part of the country's PLANATUR 2024 - 2027 National Tourism Promotion Plan, highlighted tourism's role in economic diversification, employment generation and regional integration. Recent projections indicate tourism-related foreign direct investment in Angola could reach approximately US$3 billion, reflecting growing international confidence in the country's long-term potential.

Delegates noted Angola's competitive advantages - an Atlantic coastline, rich biodiversity, cultural heritage and rapidly modernising infrastructure - as key factors underpinning its emergence from one of Africa's most underexplored destinations to one of its most dynamic tourism frontiers. Yared Mesfin, Director General of Africa Travel Connect, described Angola as "a market of present opportunity," citing the government's strategic clarity and infrastructure investment as signals of readiness for tourism at scale. The forum, which included a panel featuring South Africa's Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille and African Union Commissioner Francisca Tatchouop Belobe among others, concluded with renewed commitments to continental collaboration, with delegates underscoring that Africa's broader tourism ambitions depend on coordinated regional strategies, harmonised policies and stronger public - private partnerships.
