Africa's Festival Circuit Emerges as a Major Driver of Music Tourism
Africa's live music festival scene is increasingly shaping travel decisions across the continent, with events spanning Afrobeats, amapiano, electronic music, and experimental sounds drawing local, regional, and international audiences to destinations from Accra to Zanzibar. Festivals including AfroFuture in Ghana, Nyege Nyege in Uganda, and Sauti za Busara in Zanzibar are positioning themselves not merely as entertainment events but as primary travel motivators, with itineraries and booking patterns built around their calendars. The trend reflects a broader shift in experiential tourism, where cultural programming and nightlife ecosystems are becoming central to destination appeal.
Key events on the 2026 calendar include Nyege Nyege at Kalagala Falls in Uganda from 19 to 22 November, MOGA Essaouira on Morocco's Atlantic coast from 30 September to 4 October, Lake of Stars at Fish Eagle Bay Lodge in Malawi from 2 to 4 October, and MTN Bushfire in Eswatini's Malkerns Valley from 29 to 31 May. South Africa's Amapiano Land has already staged editions in Cape Town and Johannesburg, while Kenya's Beneath the Baobabs draws New Year travellers to a baobab forest setting above Takaungu Creek in Kilifi.
