The Royals Visit Kigali
It was a great honour to host Their Royal Highnesses Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall at The Retreat & Heaven in June 2022. We’ve said for years that Kigali has become an exciting destination on any Rwanda itinerary, with a vibrant culinary, art & fashion scene, and an abundance of artisan workshops, nature walks, eco parks and other interactive experiences in what has become the cleanest, safest city on the continent! The Royals agreed and spent a week exclusively visiting Kigali, where they enjoyed time at The Retreat in the fabulous new luxury pool villas, as well as visits to several important historical, environmental and cultural projects.

In 2021, at the height of the pandemic, we expanded dramatically and constructed a whole new wing of the property, with 8 luxury pool villas - each featuring a large living area, front and back gardens, and private heated saltwater swimming pools. In addition, The Retreat now has a newly expanded spa with sauna, and treatment rooms with outdoor rain showers, an open-air state of the art gym, a new elevated event space with views of Kigali, and an elegant lounge with a full bar, fireplace and outdoor deck. In addition to our international cuisine at Fusion Restaurant, we now have a new cocktail and tapas menu up at The Lounge. Guests enjoy onsite cultural activities such as cocktail making, cooking classes, banana wine making workshops, and a new offering: our Made in Rwanda retail boutique features a full time onsite tailor who makes stunning custom clothing and accessories for our guests!

The Retreat is an entirely eco-friendly property with the largest private solar array in Kigali, solar heated, salt water swimming pool & hot tub, onsite organic composting and gardens, and we are a plastic free facility. Since we opened our first restaurant, Heaven, in 2008, we have proudly trained over 2,500 Rwandans in culinary and hospitality skills. Our passion and commitment is to provide employment, fair wages and vocational training for Rwandans, and through this mission to contribute to economic development in Rwanda.
