- Sophisticated safari living, in the land of the giants -

Dramatically perched on a hill above the Chobe River in Botswana, this refined retreat has relaunched with 15 stunning, breezy suites, scattered across lush green lawns, and gorgeous reception spaces. On the edge of Chobe National Park, home to the world’s largest population of elephants, Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero offers unparalleled views across the floodplains straddling the Botswanan, Namibian and Zambian borders.

STRIKING SENSE OF SCALE

The large, exceptional suites flaunt clean lines and natural materials, the perfect blend of modern design and distinct traditional African finishes, and feature heavenly beds, generous freestanding baths, and rain showers. Elegant organic-toned furnishings — pale sky blues, soft greys and sandy yellows — are a delight for those with discerning tastes. Outside, each suite’s large terrace is the splendid spot to sip cocktails or enjoy a romantic private dinner served under the African sky. Three of the new suites at Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero feature an extra bedroom, which is heaven-sent for families.

WHERE LUXURY MEETS NATURE

The lodge’s lounge, library and dining room showcase a new, fresh expression of safari style, inspired by an environment naturally abundant in spirit. The chic interior’s tones evoke natural woods bleached by the intense heat, complemented with gentle geometric prints and beautiful mosaic floorings. The library has an interesting array of books about Botswana, so guests can learn about everything in this remarkable corner of the world, from the San Bushmen to the wildlife they'll encounter.

WINDOWS ONTO THE WILDERNESS

An elevated, shaded veranda looks out onto the gardens and the beautiful vistas beyond, sound-tracked by the noises of Africa. For added entertainment, birdlife is abundant, with regular viewings of species ornithologists might consider a rare treat. The super-comfortable seating tempts guests to admire unobstructed sundown look-outs as dusk falls for as long as possible, maximising the connection to nature.

DISTINCT DESTINATION DELICACIES

In the dining room, or on the veranda, an exquisite culinary experience of gourmet cuisine, fine wines and personalised hospitality is served by the friendly staff. Mouth-watering meals showcase a perfect fusion of African and Western cuisines with favourites including steamed Cape mussels in a leek and wine sauce, and green lamb curry with fragrant rice. For a simple but delicious lunch, the wood-burning pizza oven is regularly the star of the show.

WELLNESS IN THE WILD

Where could be more relaxing and restorative than this serene wilderness, which awakens all the senses? A full-service spa, with a unique tree-top treatment room, invites the body and the mind to be pampered, with an African Heated Stone Massage, for example, using mineral-rich volcanic basalt rocks and shea butter to work its de-stressing magic. Or the African Potato Anti-Ageing Body Experience in which a warm African potato and Marula wrap detoxes and hydrates. The split-level swimming pool is waiting to offer refreshment and gentle exercise, while more energetic guests will love the new gym with equipment including a treadmill, rowing machine, exercise bike and weights.

AN EXCLUSIVE CAMP FOR EPIC ADVENTURES

Cruise the Chobe River and experience a unique water safari in one of Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero’s specially adapted motorboats. Spot fish eagles, long-neck herons and Nile crocodiles while exploring the banks and tributaries of this famous river. Big herds of elephants dominate the varied terrain, with forests, meadows and sand plains, and these gentle giants come down to the waterside to bathe and frolic in boisterous mood. Lions, leopards, buffaloes and the other big predators – cheetah, wild dog and hyena – can also be seen roaming Chobe National Park, making this a rare habitat.
