Travel with Purpose with Wilderness Safaris – Great Apes and Rainforests
By Wendy Ngcobo, Wilderness SafarisIn celebration of its 35th year of changing lives, Wilderness Safaris introduced 12 ‘Travel with Purpose’ itineraries to take place over the next year on 15 January 2018. The first of these is the exclusive, six-night Great Apes and Rainforests itinerary which will take place from 6 – 12 May 2018, placing a maximum number of six guests at the coalface of conservation and community engagements in both Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In addition to offering guests exclusive insight into both great ape conservation and reforestation projects in one of the world’s richest biodiverse hotspots, the Albertine Rift, this life-changing journey will also give guests the unique privilege of seeing three great ape species – Critically Endangered mountain and Grauer’s gorillas, plus eastern chimpanzees – whilst being accompanied by a range of leading conservation and community experts.
None of the organisations involved in this trip – Wilderness Safaris, Thousand Hills Africa, Forest of Hope Association and Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI) – will receive payment or mark-up on this journey. All proceeds will be channelled to the Karisoke Conservation Bursary Fund, which will be overseen by the Wilderness Wildlife Trust, and reserved for Rwanda students working with DFGFI through the Karisoke Research Centre. The bursaries (at the Master’s or Doctoral level) are intended to yield a future cohort of Rwandan researchers, conservationists and programme managers.
