Protais Niyigaba
Park Manager / CEO, Nyungwe Management Company
Protais Niyigaba, a Rwandan Citizen, married (to Uwingabire Marie Rose) and father of two (daughter and son), was hired as Nyungwe’s Park Manager since June 2021. He holds a MSc. in Biodiversity Conservation from the University of Rwanda, and has used Nyungwe forest as the ‘research laboratory’ for his previous studies. He has worked in Nyungwe since 2011, first as a Park Guide / Nature Interpreter under the Rwanda Development Board until 2014; as the Biodiversity Monitoring Officer under the Wildlife Conservation Society – Rwanda Program until May, 2021; and as a Visiting Lecturer and curriculum reviewer at Kitabi College of Conservation and Environmental Management (currently, IPRC-KITABI) between 2015 and 2017. Between 2020 and 2021, Protais has also worked as a Partner States Coordinator (Consultant) on the "Economics of Natural Capital in East Africa Program” under Environmental Incentives, LLC. Inspired by the impact made by African Parks elsewhere on the continent, he has joined AP to contribute to the sustainable management of Nyungwe National Park. Protais’ hobbies include birding, botanizing, and hiking.
