Zanzibar and Infinity sign USD 12m heritage restoration deal to boost tourism
The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has signed a USD 12 million public – private partnership with Infinity Developments to restore and modernise key heritage sites across the archipelago, aiming to strengthen cultural preservation and enhance the islands’ global tourism appeal. The programme spans locations within and beyond Stone Town, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed centre, and is described as one of Zanzibar’s most significant heritage-focused partnerships in recent years.
Works will target the Old Fort, the High Court Museum and historic bath complexes – Hamamni Persian Baths, Forodhani Hamam Baths, Kidichi Hamam Baths and Kizimbani Hamam Baths – delivering conservation, infrastructure upgrades, improved visitor facilities and cultural programming through Infinity’s cultural programme. At the signing, Aboud Suleiman Jumbe, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, said the partnership marks a turning point and aligns with President Hussein Ali Mwinyi’s agenda to place heritage at the core of long-term social and economic development.
