The Kafue Flats in Zambia will benefit from two climate adaptation and wildlife conservation projects worth a combined $9 million, aimed at safeguarding the ecosystem and bolstering community resilience. Announced at a validation meeting in Lusaka, Acting Permanent Secretary Ranford Simumbwe highlighted the urgent need for such initiatives, given the increasing risks posed by droughts and floods to the region’s livelihoods and ecosystems. The projects—KaF-Adapt and KaF-Wild—are funded through the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and will focus on climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable livelihoods.

WWF Zambia, in partnership with the Ministries of Green Economy and Tourism, as well as the International Crane Foundation, will manage the implementation. WWF Zambia Country Director Nalucha Ziba praised the government’s efforts to secure funding under the GEF, while Mr. Simumbwe noted that the projects aim to promote coexistence between people, livestock, and wildlife. Supported by local leaders and key stakeholders, the initiatives strengthen Zambia’s commitment to sustainable land management and climate adaptation, ensuring the preservation of the Kafue Flats for future generations.
