Known as Mozambique's Marine Big 5, these incredible ocean species include:
- Humpback Whale
- Whale Shark
- Manta Ray

- Bottlenose Dolphin
Whale Watching in Mozambique: Witnessing the Return of the Humpback Whale
Each year, between June and October, humpback whales migrate along the Mozambican coastline and through the waters of the Bazaruto Archipelago. August to October is widely regarded as the peak whale watching season, offering exceptional opportunities to witness these magnificent giants as they journey through the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
Growing up to 16 metres in length and weighing as much as 30 tonnes, humpback whales are celebrated for their spectacular breaches, powerful tail slaps and haunting underwater songs. Witnessing these gentle giants in their natural habitat is an unforgettable reminder of the extraordinary life that exists beneath the ocean's surface.
Exploring Mozambique's Marine Big 5
While humpback whales are one of the region's seasonal highlights, the waters surrounding the Bazaruto Archipelago offer extraordinary marine encounters throughout the year.
Whale Shark
The whale shark is the largest fish in the ocean, with some individuals growing beyond 18 metres in length. Despite their immense size, these gentle filter feeders feed primarily on plankton and are completely harmless to humans.
October to March is typically considered the best time to encounter whale sharks in the waters surrounding the Bazaruto Archipelago, offering the rare opportunity to swim alongside one of the ocean's true giants.
Manta Ray
Among the Indian Ocean's most graceful inhabitants, manta rays can reach wingspans of up to seven metres. Recognisable by their distinctive cephalic lobes and effortless movements, they can be encountered year-round while scuba diving in the vibrant reefs surrounding the archipelago.
Dugong
The dugong is one of the ocean's rarest marine mammals and the only surviving member of the Dugongidae family. Feeding exclusively on seagrass, it is also the world's only fully herbivorous marine mammal.
Classified as critically endangered, dugongs are incredibly elusive, making every sighting a privilege and an important reminder of the region's ongoing conservation efforts.
Bottlenose Dolphin
Bottlenose dolphins are among the most familiar and captivating marine mammals, frequently delighting visitors with their playful behaviour throughout the year. Other dolphin species, including endangered humpback dolphins and spinner dolphins, may also be encountered in the region's warm coastal waters.
