Twin mountain gorillas born in DRC’s Virunga
Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo has confirmed the birth of twin male mountain gorillas to 22-year-old female Mafuko, discovered by community trackers on 3 January. Twin births account for roughly 1% of all mountain gorilla births, with the last recorded in Virunga in 2020; the mother and infants are reported to be in good health.
Park authorities have introduced additional monitoring and protection to support the infants during the vulnerable early months. Virunga – Africa’s oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – shelters one of the largest mountain gorilla populations and underpins high-value trekking tourism, though operations continue amid threats from armed groups, deforestation and poaching.
