Tanzania to host UN Tourism Gastronomy Forum in 2025
Tanzania has been selected to host the Second United Nations Tourism (UN Tourism) Regional Forum on Gastronomy for Africa in 2025. The announcement was made by UN Tourism Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili at the inaugural forum in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
Pololikashvili commended Tanzania's Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Angellah Kairuki, for her commitment to promoting indigenous food tourism. He emphasized the importance of showcasing Africa's rich cultural heritage, particularly its gastronomy, beyond traditional safari tourism.
Minister Kairuki highlighted the forum's potential benefits for Tanzania's tourism value chain, involving stakeholders from farmers to food processors. She stressed the opportunity to showcase Tanzania's heritage and enhance its tourism sector.
The event will feature competitions for students and professionals to exchange experiences with counterparts from other African countries. Dr Florian Mtey, CEO of the National College of Tourism Tanzania, noted the forum's significance for tourism education, aligning with their culinary training programs.
Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who opened the current forum, emphasised agriculture's crucial role in food tourism, underlining the sector's importance across the continent.
