Tanzania Signals Readiness to Capture Greater Share of Chinese Outbound Tourism Market
Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to attracting more Chinese tourists, with Tanzania Tourist Board Director General Ephraim Mafuru representing the country at a high-level panel discussion titled "China Outbound Travel Trends and African Destinations" at WTM Africa 2026 in Cape Town. Mafuru said Tanzania is well prepared to receive Chinese visitors and has developed a clearer understanding of their travel preferences and expectations, which he described as essential to tailoring the country's offerings for this market. The session was led by Dr Marcus Lee, CEO of China Travel Online, who underscored China's position as the world's largest outbound tourism market and the significant opportunity it presents for African destinations.
Panellists stressed that African countries must collaborate to improve infrastructure, strengthen targeted marketing strategies, and design travel experiences that meet Chinese visitor expectations. The discussion highlighted that tapping into Asia's rapidly growing tourism sector will require coordinated regional engagement rather than isolated national efforts. For Tanzania - already one of Africa's premier safari and beach destinations - increased visibility in the Chinese market represents a significant opportunity to diversify its source markets and drive further growth in international arrivals.
