Tanzania Registers 1918 Chagga Tunnel Near Kilimanjaro as Cultural Tourism Attraction

Tanzania has officially registered a 2,300-foot-long tunnel near Mount Kilimanjaro as a tourism attraction, adding a cultural heritage experience to the country's northern circuit. Carved through solid rock by the Chagga community in 1918 as a refuge during conflict with the Masai, the tunnel features sleeping areas, cooking sections, storage rooms and livestock spaces - built to shelter families underground for extended periods.

The Tanzanian government has allocated more than 120 million shillings (approximately $46,000) towards site improvements, including lighting, visitor access upgrades and safety infrastructure, following formal endorsement by Tanzania's Parliamentary Standing Committee on Lands, Natural Resources and Tourism. The attraction is currently in an early rollout phase with no standalone packages available, and access is being arranged on a case-by-case basis through local ground handlers. It is positioned as a complementary addition to existing Kilimanjaro and northern circuit itineraries, offering operators a cultural touchpoint in a region historically defined by mountain trekking. Structured visitor programmes and standardised packages are expected to follow as development progresses.
