Tanzania Orders Infrastructure Upgrades at Tarangire National Park Ahead of El Niño Season

Tanzania's Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Nkoba Mabula, has directed Tarangire National Park and the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) to accelerate infrastructure improvements and emergency preparedness ahead of anticipated El Niño rains. The directive, issued during an official visit to the park, focuses on strengthening communication systems and training rangers and officers in rescue operations to minimise disruption to conservation and tourism activities.

Tarangire National Park has already repaired six pieces of road maintenance and rescue equipment and established a rapid-response emergency team in partnership with the Babati District Commissioner's Office, following resolutions reached at a meeting on 6 October 2026. Working alongside tourism stakeholders, including accommodation providers, the park has also improved drainage systems along tourist roads through light grading, pothole filling and the excavation of drainage channels. TANAPA's Deputy Conservation Commissioner, Izumbe Msindai, confirmed that all national parks have taken early preparedness measures, urging continued ministerial support to protect tourism revenue and maintain safe access for domestic and international visitors during the rainy season.
