Kruger National Park Faces R481m Funding Gap After Devastating January Floods

South Africa's Kruger National Park is facing a funding shortfall of R481 million to complete flood repairs estimated at R950 million in total, following severe damage to roads, bridges and accommodation caused by torrential rains in January 2026. Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment David Maynier confirmed the figures during an August site visit, noting that SANParks has allocated R100 million, the national government R218 million, and an insurance settlement of R150 million has been received, leaving a significant gap yet to be addressed.

The damage has had a measurable impact on visitor numbers at one of Africa's most visited wildlife destinations, with February 2026 arrivals down 7,000 on the same month in 2025, recording approximately 90,000 guests. The park welcomed 1.87 million visitors in the 12 months to March 2025. To date, around R87 million has been spent on repairs, with a further R188 million in projects approved. The ongoing shortfall poses a concern for South Africa's inbound tourism sector, with Kruger National Park serving as a flagship destination and home to critically endangered species including the black rhinoceros.
