Tanzania calls for private investment to boost Ngorongoro tourism

Tanzania has urged the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority to deepen private sector engagement to expand accommodation, transport and tourism products as visitor numbers rise. Natural Resources and Tourism Minister Dr Ashatu Kijaji delivered the call in Arusha at the swearing-in of new Commissioner for Conservation Abdul Razaq Badru and the inauguration of the NCAA board. Ngorongoro recorded 1,061,620 visitors in the 2024/25 financial year, up from 908,627 a year earlier.

Planned investments aim to lift bed capacity from 1,555 to more than 2,590 ahead of major events including Inter-Parliamentary Union meetings and AFCON 2027, which Tanzania will co-host. The minister directed the NCAA and stakeholders to prioritise product innovation – with at least one new attraction each year – while balancing growth with conservation, infrastructure and community partnerships. The Authority has set a Sh350 billion revenue target after collecting Sh269.9 billion in 2024/25, aligning with the national goal to attract eight million tourists annually by 2030.
