South Africa Leads Africa's Aviation Network With 575 Airports, New Rankings Show

South Africa tops the continent's aviation rankings with 575 airports, making it the only African country to feature in the global top 15, according to World Population Review's 2026 rankings. Kenya follows in second place with 370 airports, ranking 19th globally, while the Democratic Republic of Congo places third with 272. The rankings count all airports and airfields recognisable from the air, including paved and unpaved, active and abandoned facilities. Namibia ranks fourth with 255 airports - placing 26th globally - ahead of Tanzania (206), Zimbabwe (144), Botswana (122), Zambia (119), Angola (106), and Mozambique (92).

The rankings highlight that Africa's airport infrastructure is driven less by population size and more by geographic necessity. Countries such as Namibia, Botswana, and Zambia feature prominently due to their large territories, remote communities, wildlife tourism industries, and mining operations that depend on air access where road infrastructure is limited or absent. Tanzania's network supports one of Africa's busiest wildlife tourism sectors, with bush airstrips serving the Serengeti and Selous, while Botswana's 122 airports are closely tied to its high-end safari economy in the Okavango Delta and Kalahari. Mozambique's 92 airports reflect the logistical demands of a coastline stretching over 2,500 kilometres alongside underdeveloped interior road networks.
