Sierra Leone Trains Women Journalists to Strengthen Tourism Storytelling
Twenty-six female journalists, bloggers and media practitioners have completed a two-day training programme in Sierra Leone focused on sustainable tourism reporting. Organised by the Women in Tourism Leadership Africa Committee (WiTLAC) in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, the workshop - titled "Empowering Sierra Leonean Journalists for Sustainable Tourism Reporting" - aimed to equip participants with the skills to produce in-depth tourism stories for both local and international audiences. Minister of Tourism Nabeela Farida Tunis described the initiative as a deliberate investment in strengthening the voices shaping Sierra Leone's tourism narrative.
The programme was led by two facilitators combining local and international expertise, including Sierra Leone-based consultant Howard, who guided participants on capturing authentic local narratives, and Kingsley Uranta, General Manager of Channels Television and Channels Academy, who introduced global reporting standards through practical exercises. Participants also undertook a field visit to Lumley Beach Arts and Craft Market, where they produced digital content including social media reels showcasing local craftsmanship and cultural heritage. The programme concluded with a certification ceremony supported by officials from the National Tourist Board, the Ministry of Gender and Children's Affairs and the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank, reflecting broad institutional backing for the initiative.
