Seychelles Promotes Heritage Nomination and SIDS Agenda at UNESCO Forum
Seychelles took part in a high-level panel at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 8 May 2026, held to mark the International Day for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Ambassador Georges Tirant, Seychelles' Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, participated in the "Partnerships and Financing" panel, where he advocated for greater recognition of SIDS within UNESCO's institutional framework and called for dedicated support structures to strengthen climate action and financing for small island nations. A key focus of Seychelles' participation was the promotion of its World Heritage nomination for the Mission Ruins of Venn's Town – a site that, if inscribed, would become the country's first historic landmark on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Ambassador Tirant also drew attention to Seychelles' track record in innovative financing, referencing the country's landmark 2018 Blue Bond, which raised capital for marine and ocean-based projects with environmental and economic benefits, and underscored the need for broader implementation of the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI) in global decision-making. On the sidelines of the forum, the Seychellois Embassy in Paris - in collaboration with the local diaspora - presented a cultural stand featuring traditional culinary dishes as part of an exhibition spotlighting SIDS heritage. The event, attended by senior representatives from UNESCO, the European Union, Australia, and regional organisations, highlights the growing intersection of cultural diplomacy and tourism positioning for small island destinations.
