Rob Walton Foundation Commits $4.6 Million to African Parks' Results-Based Conservation Finance Model
African Parks has secured a $4.6 million commitment from the Rob Walton Foundation to advance conservation finance across four protected areas in Africa. The outcomes-based grant uses Verifiable Nature Units (VNUs) as proof of performance, directing funding towards biodiversity monitoring, community development and park infrastructure at Majete Wildlife Reserve in Malawi, Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the Republic of Congo, Garamba National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zakouma National Park in Chad.
VNUs provide a standardised, transparent mechanism for measuring conservation impact, with each unit representing one square kilometre of nature where ecological integrity has been maintained or improved over an annual period. The Rob Walton Foundation's support marks a significant step in demonstrating how verified conservation outcomes can be linked to scalable funding, with African Parks planning to reissue VNUs, expand projects and broaden their application across additional financial instruments. "They offer a compelling model for philanthropy today, while helping demonstrate how rigorous, measurable conservation outcomes could support a broader range of financing approaches over time," said Duko Hopman, Executive Director of the Rob Walton Foundation.
