Rising US Travel Demand Keeps South Africa on Delta's Radar
Growing demand for travel between the United States and South Africa has prompted Delta Air Lines to reaffirm its long-term commitment to the market, even as it faces constraints on expanding services. Speaking at the airline's 20-year anniversary celebrations in South Africa, Delta executives said tourism, business travel and the meetings and events sector continue to drive strong demand. The airline currently operates daily flights between Johannesburg and Atlanta, as well as three weekly services from Cape Town, but says all available flight rights under the current bilateral agreement are already being used.
Delta believes there is significant potential to grow capacity if South Africa and the US revisit their air services agreement. The airline highlighted that more than 430,000 Americans visited South Africa in 2024, a 5.2% increase on the previous year, following an even stronger rebound in 2023. With demand continuing to rise for safari, wine, heritage and business travel, Delta views South Africa as one of its most important African markets and says expanding air connectivity would unlock further tourism and economic opportunities.
