Qantas is set to significantly increase capacity on its Sydney to Johannesburg route from 30 September, deploying an Airbus A380 superjumbo to replace the current Boeing Dreamliner.

The move will double the airline's capacity, adding 55,000 seats annually. Michi Messner, Qantas' Regional Manager for Africa, stated that peak period capacity will double from 236 seats to 485 seats per flight.

Flight frequency will alternate between five and six flights per week once the A380 is introduced. Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace noted that the additional capacity aims to meet increased demand for international travel and potentially reduce fares.

The A380 will feature a four-class interior, including 14 first-class suites, 70 business-class seats, 60 premium economy seats, and 341 economy-class seats. A premium-class onboard lounge will also be available.

This expansion is part of Qantas' broader strategy to return more A380s to service following post-storage refurbishment and maintenance. The airline expects the increased capacity to support growing demand for international travel and offer customers greater value and choice.
