New Monkey Species Confirmed in DR Congo's Lomami National Park

A new species of colobus monkey, distinguished by its black fur and striking pinkish-orange lips, has been officially confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Scientifically named Colobus congoensis, the primate was found in the tropical forests of Lomami National Park in the country's central east, and represents only the fifth African monkey species to be formally identified in the past 75 years. Local communities had long been aware of the animal, referring to it as "Likweli," but it remained unrecorded by science until now.

The species was first photographed by conservationists in 2008, with formal scientific investigation following a second sighting a decade later by an international research team from the DRC, the United States, and Germany. Researchers believe the monkeys are rare and restricted to a limited forest range, and note that they have likely been subject to hunting in the past. With the species now formally classified, scientists are calling for official protections to be put in place. A more detailed population survey and behavioural study are planned, as researchers say many questions about Colobus congoensis remain unanswered.
