Mozambique Conducts First Tourist Expenditure Survey to Assess Tourism's Economic Contribution

Mozambique completed the first phase of its Tourist Expenditure Survey (INDEST) from 4 to 10 April 2026, marking the country's first structured effort to collect data on the spending patterns, traveller profiles, motivations, and length of stay of departing foreign tourists. The initiative was coordinated by the Ministry of Economy in partnership with the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the Bank of Mozambique, the National Migration Service (SENAMI), and Airports of Mozambique. Data collection was conducted at airports and key land border crossings, with full confidentiality of respondent information guaranteed.

The survey is designed to enable a more accurate assessment of tourism's contribution to Mozambique's national economy, including its impact on GDP, and to inform public policy formulation. The findings are expected to strengthen Mozambique's ability to position itself more competitively as a tourism destination by grounding strategy in reliable, evidence-based data. The successful completion of the first phase was attributed to the cooperation of tourism operators, the general public, and international visitors.
