Mozambican National Park Begins Wildlife Reintroduction with 400 Animals

Mozambique’s Banhine National Park has launched a major biodiversity restoration effort with the introduction of 400 animals in what officials describe as a historic step toward ecological renewal. Located in Gaza Province, the park aims to receive approximately 1,100 more animals from other conservation areas by 2026, as part of a long-term strategy to restore its ecosystems and revive its former status as a wildlife-rich landscape known as the “Little Serengeti”.

Recent investments include park infrastructure upgrades, new ranger hires – 35 in 2024 alone – and strengthened community engagement. While challenges such as water scarcity, poaching, and bushfires remain, the park’s growing wildlife population is seen as key to boosting eco-tourism. With new private concession opportunities and community revenue-sharing schemes, Banhine is positioning itself as a model for conservation-led development in southern Mozambique.
