Kenya Launches Astro-Tourism Drive Under Rare Lunar Eclipse
Kenya has launched a new astro-tourism initiative, capitalising on its low levels of light pollution and wide open skies. The campaign was unveiled during Sunday’s rare 'blood moon' lunar eclipse at a remote lodge in Samburu County, where local communities, tourists, and government representatives gathered to witness the celestial event. Led by Kenya’s tourism ministry and the Kenya Space Agency, the initiative aims to promote astro-tourism as a viable addition to the country’s travel offerings.
Officials from the Kenya Space Agency described the project as a “game-changer” for the tourism sector, which already accounts for nearly 10% of the nation’s GDP. With interest growing globally in dark-sky experiences, Kenya’s clear night skies and untapped stargazing potential present a new opportunity to attract visitors beyond the country’s traditional wildlife and safari draws.
