IATA Partners With Airline Association of Southern Africa (AASA) to launch a regional aviation logistics safety initiative

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has warned that geopolitical instability, rising operational costs and ongoing safety concerns are creating growing challenges for the global aviation industry. Speaking at the organisation's annual meeting, IATA highlighted the increasing impact of conflicts, trade tensions, sanctions and airspace disruptions on airline operations. In Southern Africa, IATA has partnered with the Airline Association of Southern Africa (AASA) to launch a regional aviation logistics safety initiative aimed at standardising safety practices across the SADC region and strengthening supply chain resilience.

IATA also stressed that aviation remains a critical driver of economic growth across Africa, but warned that the sector faces mounting pressures from geopolitical uncertainty, high operating costs and infrastructure challenges. The association called for closer collaboration between governments, regulators and industry stakeholders to improve safety standards, enhance connectivity and support sustainable growth. The warning comes as airlines globally grapple with rising fuel prices, disrupted air corridors and broader geopolitical tensions that are placing profitability under increasing strain.
